Author Biographies

• Silvia Casini, University of Aberdeen

  Silvia Casini is Senior Lecturer in Film and Visual Culture at the University of Aberdeen (UK) where she teaches courses to students in the humanities and the life sciences. Her work is situated at the crossroad of visual culture, cinema, science studies, and the medical humanities. She is interested in exploring the aesthetic, epistemological and societal implications of scientific photography and data-visualisation. Her research features in journals such as Configurations, Leonardo, Contemporary Aesthetics, Nuncius: Journal of the Material and Visual History of Science, VCS Visual Culture Studies, The Senses and Society, Elephant & Castle, Studi di Estetica, Forum for Modern Language Studies. Her latest monograph is Giving Bodies back to Data (MIT Press 2021).

• Alice Cati, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore

  Alice Cati is an Associate Professor at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Milan), where she teaches “Languages and Semiotics of Media Products” and “Audiovisual Languages”. Her recent publications include “Cinergie” special issue The Migrant as an Eye/I. Transculturality, Self-representation, Audiovisual Practices (with M. Grassilli, 2019); The Vulnerable Gaze of the Migrant (“Alphaville” 2019), From Genealogy to Genetic Memory (“Comunicazioni Sociali” 2020). She is currently working on the editorial project Stories and practices of amateur cinema in Italy (1922-1995) (with A. Mariani and P. Simoni, “Immagine”, forthcoming).

• Deborah Toschi, University of Pavia

  Deborah Toschi is Associate Professor in Film and Media Studies at Pavia University, where she teaches Film Analysis and Italian Film History. She is a member of the Centre of Studies Self Media Lab. Writings, Performance, Technologies of the Self, dealing with the forms of digital self-portraiture. Her main areas of research concern Italian cinema, gender studies (La ragazza del cinematografo. Mary Pickford e la costruzione della diva internazionale, Mimesis, 2016) and the medical and scientific imaginary in contemporary visual culture.
