    Call for paper 2025: Peoples and Governments in historical perspective and / or in the present

    The board of the Italian Review of Legal History invites all scholars to contribute to the next issue of the year (2025) on the topic: Peoples and Governments in historical perspective and / or in the present

    For centuries, in Western and Eastern cultures, it has been argued that the main function of 'good government' is to take care of the peace, utility and general interest of the people.

    The prospects for debate on this topic are endless.

    The term people has had in the past and has in the present many declinations: community, citizenship, ethnicity, nationality. The same can be said for the terms peace, utility and general interest, which involve both public law and social and cultural profiles if we think, for example, of the issues of inequality, health and education.

    Perspectives on the sovereignty

    The Board of the Italian Review of Legal History invites all scholars to publish to the next issue of the review (num. 8 2022) in order to contribute to the debate on the topic of the sovereignty, in a historical perspective or with regard to current events in Europe and outside Europe.

    The concept of sovereignty has been at the center of legal, political, philosophical and economic debate for centuries and few terms concerning institutions have taken on such a wide range of meanings in history. In different cultural spheres and from a variety of perspectives, the reflection on the polysemic content and on the various declinations of this concept in the diverse areas of the world, not only between past and present, but also regarding the possible frameworks that it could assume in the more or less near future, continues.

    Submission deadline: June 30th, 2022.

    Papers can be written in the following languages: Italian, English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese.

    At the choice of the author, papers will be published:

    1. in Italian (or in another of the languages above mentioned) and English
    2. only in Italian language (or in another of the languages above mentioned) with an abstract in English of at least 4.000 characters.

    Submission deadline: July 10th, 2021.

    The issue will include papers on legal and legal-historical subjects.

    Papers can be written in the following languages: Italian, English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese.

    At the choice of the author, papers will be published:

    1. in Italian (or in another of the languages above mentioned) and English
    2. only in Italian language (or in another of the languages above mentioned) with an abstract in English of at least 4.000 characters.

    WAR AND PEACE BETWEEN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE

    The Board of the Italian Review of Legal History invites all scholars to contribute to the debate on the above topic, in a historical perspective or with regard to current events. War is the most organized and structured form of violence; throughout the centuries, it has challenged the law, that in turn has attempted to provide it with a legal framework, by principles, institutions, institutes, practices, thus aiming explicitly or implicitly at switching from “silent leges inter arma” to “cedant arma togae”.

    There are various perspectives through which we can watch the topic: apart from military history and history of diplomacy and of international relations, the unfailing presence of the wars and the means to prevent or resolve them affect any field of historiography.

    The tension between war and peace, concerning both public and private subjects (for example: family infighting and interpersonal conflicts or private wars and peace agreements in the communal and early modern European history) from the Middle Ages to modern period, poses many questions to jurists and historians, both at European and global level.

    Even though the wideness of the topic has stimulated the attention of historiography, it still needs to be studied from new perspectives and by different lines of research, thus offering original findings.

    Submission deadline: September 30, 2020.

    At the choice of the author, papers will be published in Italian (or mother language) and English or only in Italian language (or mother language) with an abstract in English of at least 4.000 characters.
